Rotary (wheel) tube cutters sever copper or aluminium tubing with a turning motion, leaving a smooth, square edge with no crushing of the bore — a prerequisite for a correct flare and a leak-tight refrigerant joint. This category covers pocket cutters for thin-wall installation copper, models with a quick-feed mechanism and ratchet handle for working in tight spaces (mini cutters for tubing at split evaporators), heavy-wall cutters, and shears for plastic pipe (PEX, PE-RT), condensate hose and insulation mat. Most cutters include a built-in reamer/deburrer to remove the internal burr after cutting.
When choosing a cutter, check the diameter range (e.g. 3–28 mm, 6–67 mm) and whether it covers the tube sizes you work with — both imperial and metric. Pay attention to cutting-wheel quality (one for copper, a separate hardened wheel for stainless/harder alloys), the presence of a bearing-mounted roller and the availability of spare wheels. For split servicing, the mini cutter's minimum working clearance matters; for prefabrication, a quick-clamp feed and a comfortable deburrer count. Choose shears by maximum material thickness and type (plastic vs rubber/elastomeric insulation); for PEX use a guided-blade shear, not a pruner, to get a square cut for the fitting.
