The oil in a vacuum pump lubricates and seals the vanes while also absorbing the moisture and contaminants drawn out of the system during evacuation. Worn or moisture-laden oil raises the ultimate vacuum and lengthens evacuation time — which is why it is changed regularly, and always after evacuating a heavily moisture- or oil-contaminated system. The low vapour pressure of good oil lets the pump reach and hold a vacuum below 500 microns.
When choosing an oil, follow the viscosity grade recommended by the pump manufacturer (most often ISO VG 68) and its compatibility with the model (e.g. Fieldpiece VP/VPX, Wipcool 2F series). Keep enough on hand for several changes — clean oil is the condition for a repeatable, deep vacuum. Do not mix mineral and synthetic oils unless the manufacturer specifies it.
