Choosing a vacuum pump: CFM, two stages and A2L refrigerants

Bigger isn't everything. Here is what to look at: stages, ultimate vacuum and working with R32.

Match CFM to the system

For typical splits and multisplits a 1.5–4 CFM pump is enough; for VRF and long pipe runs choose 6–8 CFM. Too small a pump drags out evacuation, too big is wasted cost — size it to your typical job.

Always two-stage

A two-stage pump reaches a far deeper ultimate vacuum (below 15 microns) than a single-stage. That is essential for removing moisture — single-stage units suit only rough work.

Working with flammables (A2L/R32)

With R32 and other A2L refrigerants use equipment rated to operate in their presence and keep the area ventilated. Many newer pumps (e.g. the F R32 series) are built to reduce ignition risk.

Oil and servicing

Clean oil is half the battle — change it after every wet system and before long storage. Keep a stock of genuine oil (e.g. Wipcool WPO-2) so a job is never interrupted.
